How does weight affect flight speed?

Excessive weight can negatively affect an airplane's speed, take-off and landing distance, rate of climb, ceiling (maximum altitude), maneuverability, and range. Excessive weight often requires a pilot to reconsider the requirements of the trip. If maximum range is required, occupants or cargo loads must be decreased.

Kind of. If you load an aircraft more, it needs, from it's wings, more lift force to balance the now greater force of gravity pulling it down. That larger lift force can be obtained in three ways. By increasing the airspeed, by increasing the angle of attack, by changing the wing geometry.

Aviation Weight and Balance Namely, load distribution is the other factor of the flight that is most directly affected by the weight of the aircraft. This makes climbing and cruising much more difficult. To illustrate, a heavier aircraft will have a slower climb rate than one that is properly loaded and lighter.

3 Answers. Airlines do care about your carry-on weight and even your weight. Many have carry-on weight limits, which low-cost carriers usually enforce, weighing the carry-on and tagging it as cabin luggage. Full-service airlines rarely bother.

Weight is a major factor in aircraft construction and operation and demands respect from all pilots. The force of gravity continuously attempts to pull an aircraft down toward Earth. The force of lift is the only force that counteracts weight and sustains an aircraft in flight.

The way air moves around the wings gives the airplane lift. The shape of the wings helps with lift, too. Weight is the force that pulls the airplane toward Earth. Airplanes are built so that their weight is spread from front to back.

Above this altitude the aircraft cannot fly fast enough to generate enough lift to stay aloft. This is affected by: weight (more weight needs more lift) engine power (more lift means more drag, that is overcome by engine power)

With a heavier aircraft, your AOA in cruise is closer to the critical AOA, causing you to stall at a faster airspeed. A lighter aircraft will have more degrees of AOA to increase before it encounters the critical AOA, causing you to stall at a lower airspeed.

Most airlines are extremely strict checking your baggage weight and will charge you an outrageous amount of money for over their set limit. If you expect to go over the limit it is cheaper to buy the extra weight when you book the flight online.

Each bag should weigh less than 23KG/50LBS. This is an international regulation set for the health and safety of airport workers who have to lift hundreds of bags daily.
