How early should you arrive at Amtrak?

For most Amtrak travelers in 2026, the general recommendation is to arrive at the station at least 30 to 45 minutes before your scheduled departure. Unlike airports, you do not have to clear a TSA security checkpoint, but you do need time to locate your platform, which is often only announced 15 minutes prior to boarding. If you are departing from a major hub like New York Penn Station, Chicago Union Station, or Washington Union Station, aim for 60 minutes to navigate the crowds and potential gate changes. For passengers who need to check bags or are traveling with pets, 45 to 60 minutes is a safer window. The most significant exception is the Amtrak Auto Train, which requires travelers to check in their vehicles at least two hours before departure. If you have a sleeper car or a business class ticket, arriving early allows you to take advantage of the Metropolitan Lounges where available, offering a much more relaxed start to your journey compared to the general boarding area.
