How early should you arrive for an Amtrak train?

Plan to arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before your train is scheduled to depart (Auto Train passengers should arrive at the station at least two hours prior to departure).

Unlike the high-intensity security of an airport, Amtrak offers a more streamlined experience, but timing is still critical. The general recommendation is to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure. However, this varies by station size and service. At massive hubs like New York Penn Station or Chicago Union Station, arriving 45 to 60 minutes early is safer to navigate the complex platforms and large crowds. If you are checking baggage, the 45-minute window is usually mandatory, as baggage counters typically close their manifests 30 minutes prior to departure. For the Auto Train, the rules are much stricter, requiring an arrival at least two hours early for vehicle loading. In 2026, Amtrak has emphasized punctuality; doors on most long-distance trains close exactly five minutes before departure. Arriving early not only ensures you find your seat without a "High-Fidelity" dash but also allows you to enjoy station lounges if you are traveling in First Class or a Sleeper car.
