How early should you arrive for VIA Rail?

How early must I check-in for departure? We are recommending travellers to be at the station 45 minutes prior to departure if you are travelling in the Corridor and 1 hour prior for the long hauls and regional services. Please validate VIA station hours as some stations open 30 minutes prior to scheduled train time.

For VIA Rail in Canada, the recommended arrival time depends on several factors, including your departure station, whether you have baggage to check, and if you’re traveling during a peak period.

Here’s a general guideline:

Standard Travel (Most Routes)

  • Arrive at least 30–45 minutes before departure if you already have your ticket (printed or on your phone) and are only carrying on luggage.
  • This gives you enough time to find your platform, listen for announcements, and board without rushing.

If You Need to Check Baggage

  • Arrive at least 60 minutes before departure.
  • Baggage check-in typically closes 30 minutes before departure on most routes (sometimes 45–60 minutes for busy stations or certain trains). Check VIA’s website for your specific station’s cutoff time.

Large Stations or Busy Times

  • At major stations like Toronto Union Station, Montreal Central, or Vancouver Pacific Central, plan to arrive at least 45–60 minutes early, especially during holidays, weekends, or peak travel periods.
  • Security screening is not like airports, but lines can form at ticket counters, baggage drop, and boarding gates.

If You Still Need to Collect Tickets or Have Special Needs

  • Allow extra time if you need to pick up tickets at the counter, need assistance, or are traveling with a group.

For Sleeper or Business Class Passengers

  • Boarding often starts earlier — check your specific instructions. Arriving 45–60 minutes early ensures a relaxed start.

Important Notes

  • Boarding gates usually close 5–10 minutes before departure — don’
