Cairns itself is a coastal city, but it does not have a "swimmable" sandy beach in the city center due to the mudflats and the presence of crocodiles and stingers. Instead, the city features the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon, a massive man-made saltwater swimming area. To reach true tropical sandy beaches, you must travel north. The closest beach is Machans Beach, about a 15-minute drive (10 km) from the CBD. The most popular "Northern Beaches," such as Trinity Beach and Palm Cove, are approximately 20 to 30 minutes (20-25 km) away by car or bus. In 2026, most tourists stay in the CBD for the nightlife and Great Barrier Reef tours but take a day trip or a short "Uber" ride north to experience the classic white-sand coastline.
