Lake Garda is very accessible by rail, as several major stations are located literally on the lake's southern shore. The two most prominent are Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione and Peschiera del Garda. At both stations, you are less than a 10 to 15-minute walk (approx. 500m to 1km) from the lakefront and the ferry piers. These stations sit on the main line between Milan and Venice, making it a very easy trip. If you are heading to the northern part of the lake (like Riva del Garda), the nearest station is Rovereto, which is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) away; from there, you must take a connecting bus or taxi, a journey that typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes. For the southern towns, however, the train station is practically "at the door" of the lake, offering immediate access to the water and local promenade.
