Walking to the city centre You can easily walk from the station to Munich's cathedral or the Marienplatz, the main pedestrian square in the heart of Munich. The Munich Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) is exceptionally close to the city centre, located just about 1 kilometre (0.6 miles) west of Marienplatz, the heart of the city. For a traveler in 2026, the walk from the station to the city hall takes only about 15 to 20 minutes along a vibrant pedestrian shopping street (Kaufingerstraße). If you prefer public transport, the S-Bahn (lines S1 through S8) runs every few minutes from the station's basement level and takes only 3 minutes to reach Marienplatz. Because the station is so centrally located, staying in a hotel near the Hauptbahnhof is a popular "pro-tip," as it provides easy access to the legendary beer halls, the Viktualienmarkt, and the Frauenkirche without the need for expensive taxis. The station itself is a major landmark and is currently undergoing a massive modernization project in 2026 to better integrate it with the city's pedestrian zones and the upcoming second S-Bahn trunk line.
