It is physically impossible to drive between St. Croix and St. Thomas because they are separate islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands separated by roughly 40 miles (64 km) of open Caribbean Sea. There are no bridges or tunnels connecting the two. To travel between them, you must use a passenger ferry, a seaplane, or a traditional flight. The passenger ferry departs from Charlotte Amalie (St. Thomas) and arrives in Christiansted (St. Croix), typically taking between 90 minutes and 2 hours depending on sea conditions. Flying is the fastest option; a seaplane flight takes about 20 minutes and offers stunning aerial views of the reefs, while traditional flights via Cape Air take about 25 minutes from airport to airport. While you can take a "car barge" to travel between St. Thomas and nearby St. John, there is no regular car barge service to St. Croix due to the distance and rougher waters of the open sea crossing.
