How intense is Space Mountain?

Space Mountain is an intense coaster that has many sharp twists and turns. Plus, the majority of the ride takes place in total darkness. It's a very jerky ride, meaning motion sickness is highly possible for those prone to it.

Space Mountain at Walt Disney World is often perceived as more intense than it actually is because it takes place in near-total darkness. In reality, the coaster reaches a top speed of only 27 to 28 mph, which is slower than many modern family coasters. Its intensity comes from the "unknown" factor; because you cannot see the track, you cannot anticipate the sudden turns, drops, and "near-miss" beams, which makes the ride feel significantly faster and more erratic. The version in Florida features two tracks (Alpha and Omega) with a "bobsled" style seating arrangement that can feel a bit "jerky" on the back and neck due to the vintage 1970s track design. In contrast, the Disneyland California version is smoother and features on-board synchronized audio. While it doesn't have inversions or massive drops, the combination of space-themed visuals, high-speed wind effects, and the lack of visual orientation makes it a "thrill" favorite for 2026 visitors while remaining accessible to anyone over 44 inches tall.

It's a fun ride, don't get me wrong, but it's far less intense than the original. There's maybe one good drop on the ride; it focuses mainly on helixes the whole ride. It's impeccably smooth, but it doesn't have the same thrill factor as the original IMO.

EE has a faster top speed and more thrilling drops, and theres that backwards portion. The view from the top is great also. Space is a fun coaster in complete darkness but EE still holds more thrills for me ... even with a bad Yeti component.

It was single file seating (not side by side). You could sit with one person in a seat, or two people could share the seat, with the smaller person sitting between the larger person's legs. Kind of like how you'd ride a two-person waterslide. There were grab handles in the inside walls of the car.
