We recommend that you book your JR Pass from Klook at least 2 weeks before your trip to Japan. This allows enough wiggle room in the validity period of your Exchange Order. You can't purchase your JR Pass more than 3 months before your trip, as it's past the validity period of your Exchange Order.

However, if you choose to buy from a third-party authorized dealer (which is often cheaper), you must allow enough time for them to physically mail an "Exchange Order" to your home address, which typically takes 3–7 business days. You cannot buy the traditional nationwide JR Pass once you are already inside Japan; it must be purchased while you are still abroad. It is important to remember that after purchasing, you have a 90-day window to exchange your voucher for the actual pass in Japan. As of late 2025, the JR Group has streamlined the process, but the "pre-arrival" purchase remains a strict requirement for the nationwide pass, though some regional passes (like the JR West or JR East passes) can occasionally be purchased at a higher "at-the-counter" price within the country.
