Amsterdam's public transport system is exceptionally late-running compared to many European cities. Most regular train services (NS) operate until approximately 01:00 AM. After the main schedule ends, a Night Train (Nachtnet) service takes over, running once every hour throughout the night between major hubs like Amsterdam Centraal, Schiphol Airport, Leiden, The Hague, Rotterdam, and Utrecht. In 2026, the network is expanding further; a new European Sleeper night train to Milan is scheduled to launch in June 2026, allowing for overnight international travel. For local travel within the city, most trams and buses stop around 00:30, after which a network of 12 night buses (designated with an 'N') operates until the morning. It is a peer-to-peer "pro-tip" that you can use your contactless card or phone (OV-pay) for all these services, including the night trains, making it very easy to get home after a late night in the city center.
