How long can an American stay in Kenya without a visa?

In case you are visa-exempt, you can travel to Kenya and stay there for a period of up to 90 days.

As of early 2026, Americans—and all foreign visitors—can no longer stay in Kenya "without a visa" in the traditional sense, because Kenya has transitioned to a "Visa-Free" model that requires an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). Before traveling, U.S. citizens must apply online for this eTA, which is usually processed within 72 hours. Once granted, the standard stay permitted is 90 days. If you wish to stay longer, you can apply for a one-time extension of an additional 90 days through the "eCitizen" portal while you are still in Kenya, bringing the total potential stay to 180 days for tourism purposes. It is important to note that the eTA is a mandatory entry requirement; you cannot simply show up at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with just a passport. A high-value "pro-tip" for 2026 is to ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your departure date and has at least two blank pages, as Kenyan immigration remains strict about document integrity despite the digital move toward the eTA system.
