How long can you sit in a whirlpool?

As a general rule of thumb, most hot tub sessions last between 15 and 45 minutes. If after 45 minutes you want to keep soaking, we recommend stepping out for a bit to give your body a break. Hydrate, rest and then enter the spa again.

For a healthy adult, the recommended time to spend in a whirlpool or hot tub is typically 15 to 30 minutes. While it might be tempting to stay in longer, soaking for more than 45 minutes can lead to overheating (hyperthermia), as the water is usually kept between 100°F and 104°F, which is higher than the body's natural internal temperature. Prolonged exposure can cause lightheadedness, dizziness, nausea, and a dangerous drop in blood pressure. If the water is at the maximum safe temperature of 104°F, you should limit your soak to no more than 15-20 minutes. It is also vital to stay hydrated by drinking water while you soak and to avoid alcohol, which accelerates dehydration and increases the risk of fainting. Vulnerable groups, such as children under 12, the elderly, or pregnant individuals, should consult a doctor and significantly limit their time to 5-10 minutes at a lower temperature. A good rule of thumb is to step out of the water the moment you feel overly warm or start to feel drowsy, allowing your body to cool down before considering a second short session.
