How long do I have to activate JR Pass?

You'll first receive the Exchange Order. After you receive the Exchange Order, you have 90 days to redeem your JR pass from the voucher confirmation date. After redeeming your actual JR pass, you can choose an activation date within 30 days from the redemption date.

The activation window for the Japan Rail Pass is a two-step process in 2026. First, when you purchase the pass from an authorized vendor, you receive an Exchange Order (voucher). You have exactly 90 days (3 months) from the date of purchase to physically bring this voucher to a JR Exchange Office in Japan. If you exceed this 90-day window, the voucher becomes void and you must apply for a refund (minus a fee). Once you are at the exchange office in Japan and have handed over your voucher and passport, you can choose any "Start Date" for your pass that falls within 30 days of that moment. For example, if you arrive in Tokyo on March 1st and exchange your voucher, you can set the pass to "activate" on March 10th to cover your trip to Kyoto. However, once that start date is set and printed on the pass, it cannot be changed. This 90-day purchase-to-exchange rule is a strict global standard, so it is best to buy your JR Pass no more than 6-8 weeks before your scheduled departure to Japan.
