How long do you have to activate JR Pass?

You'll first receive the Exchange Order. After you receive the Exchange Order, you have 90 days to redeem your JR pass from the voucher confirmation date. After redeeming your actual JR pass, you can choose an activation date within 30 days from the redemption date.

In 2026, the timeline for the Japan Rail (JR) Pass involves two distinct stages. First, once you purchase your "Exchange Order" (voucher) from an authorized vendor, you have exactly 90 days from the date of issue to physically exchange it for the actual pass at a JR office in Japan. Second, when you make that physical exchange, you can select an "Activation Date" (the first day you will use the pass) that is anytime within 30 days of the exchange date. This means if you are a meticulous planner, you could technically buy the voucher three months before your trip, arrive in Japan, exchange it immediately, and still set the start date for a few weeks later. However, most travelers simply exchange the voucher upon arrival at the airport. It is vital to note that once the pass is activated for its 7, 14, or 21-day duration, that period is fixed in consecutive calendar days and cannot be paused or extended, even if you do not use the train for a day.
