The Isle of Skye is much larger than it appears on a map, and driving its "length"—typically defined as the distance from the Armadale ferry terminal in the south to Duntulm or the Quiraing in the north—takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours of pure driving time. The distance is approximately 60 miles (100 km). However, this estimate assumes you are driving directly on the main A87 road without stopping. In reality, Skye's roads are often narrow, winding, and include many "single-track" sections with passing places, which can slow you down, especially during the busy summer months. If you are starting from the Skye Bridge at Kyleakin, the drive to the northern tip is about 1.5 to 2 hours. Most visitors find that it takes a full day to traverse the island because the route is packed with essential stops like the Old Man of Storr, Portree, and the Fairy Pools. In the winter or in poor weather, you should add at least 30 minutes to any cross-island journey.
