Walking "all" of Toronto Island is a significant trek, as the interconnected parkland stretches approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) from Ward’s Island in the east to Hanlan’s Point in the west. A leisurely, direct walk across the main paved path connecting these points takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours. However, if you intend to explore the various side trails, visit the residential cottages on Algonquin Island, walk the full length of the boardwalk along the Lake Ontario side, and see the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse, you should budget at least 4 to 5 hours. The terrain is almost entirely flat, making it an easy walk, but the distance adds up quickly. Most visitors combine walking with the use of the ferry system; for example, you might take the ferry to Ward's Island, walk across to Centre Island for lunch, and then continue to Hanlan's Point to catch the return ferry to the mainland. In the summer, it is essential to bring water and sun protection, as while there are many shaded groves, the main paths are quite exposed. Walking the entire island is a fantastic way to experience the transition from quiet residential gardens to bustling amusement parks and secluded, sandy beaches.
