The sensation of "rocking" or "swaying" after returning to land is technically called Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS), or more commonly, "land sickness." For the vast majority of people, this feeling is mild and lasts for only 24 to 48 hours as the brain readapts to a stationary environment. It essentially feels as though you are still on the ship's deck even when standing in your own living room. However, in rare cases, this sensation can persist for weeks or even months—a condition more frequently seen in middle-aged women. To help your body "re-center," experts suggest spending time outdoors looking at the horizon, staying hydrated, and avoiding excessive screen time immediately after disembarking. If the rocking sensation is accompanied by severe dizziness, spinning (vertigo), or lasts longer than three days, it is recommended to see a doctor to rule out an inner ear infection or other vestibular issues.
