The original and famous "9-Euro-Ticket" was a temporary government scheme in Germany that lasted for exactly three months: June, July, and August of 2022. It was designed to offset rising energy costs following the invasion of Ukraine and to encourage public transit use. Each ticket was valid for one calendar month and allowed for unlimited travel on all local and regional transport (buses, trams, U-Bahns, and RB/RE trains) across the entire country. Because it was so successful, it led to the 2023 introduction of the permanent Deutschland-Ticket (D-Ticket). As of 2026, the D-Ticket remains the successor, though it now costs €58 per month (having increased from its starting price of €49). Unlike the temporary 9-Euro version, the current D-Ticket is a rolling monthly subscription that remains valid until you cancel it, continuing the legacy of providing affordable, nationwide access to Germany's extensive regional rail and bus networks.
