How long is the train ride between the towns of Cinque Terre?

How long does it take to get between towns in the Cinque Terre on the train? From La Spezia to Riomaggiore is 10 minutes. And between the actual Cinque Terre towns, it's less than 5 minutes.

The train rides between the five towns of Cinque Terre (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore) are incredibly short, making it one of the easiest regions in Italy to navigate without a car. The actual travel time between each consecutive station is typically between 2 and 5 minutes. For example, the ride from Riomaggiore to Manarola is only about 2 minutes, while the longest jump—Monterosso to Vernazza—takes about 5 minutes. The Cinque Terre Express runs frequently during the peak season (roughly every 15 to 30 minutes), and a "Cinque Terre Treno Card" allows for unlimited travel between the villages. However, it is important to factor in the time spent walking to the station and waiting on the platform; during the crowded summer months of 2026, platforms can become extremely congested, leading to delays in boarding. While the train is the fastest way to travel, many visitors choose to hike the scenic "Sentiero Azzurro" (Blue Trail) between the towns, which can take anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours per segment, providing a much slower and more immersive experience.

You can walk the entire route in about six hours, if you take short breaks—although many hikers prefer to spread the route out over a few days at a strolling pace, stopping to enjoy the towns along the way. You can start from either direction (Monterosso, heading south, or Riomaggiore, heading north).

Two to three days would allow you to enjoy its beaches and discover the culture via a cooking class.

You definately DO NOT need a guide. If you only have one day, Monterosso is the largest town and this is where you should go. If you plan a full day, I would recommend to hike to the next town (Vernazza). It's about an hour and a half, and sooooo beautiful!

Shopping and prices The Cinque Terre is not cheap. As everywhere in the world, tourism has raised prices. I often go to the market of La Spezia to shop for food, it's much cheaper than the stores of the villages. In restaurants, you have to expect Western European prices.

Corniglia is the least known and the least visited of the five towns in Cinque Terre. Visitors often skip it, discouraged by the lack of a port and rather difficult accessibility; however, those who do come here usually fall in love with this little village and even declare it their favorite terra of all!

That said, Corniglia is by far the quietest of the Cinque Terre towns. Corniglia is located on top of a hill, far from the sea. While that makes for some seriously stunning views, it makes it harder to go for a swim in the sea and doesn't have the same maritime feeling as the other towns.
