The walk around the historic city walls of Lucca, Italy, is a loop of approximately 4.2 to 4.3 kilometers (about 2.6 miles). For most people walking at a leisurely pace, it takes between 1 hour and 1.5 hours to complete the full circuit. The path is wide, flat, and paved, as the 16th-century defensive walls were long ago converted into a raised public park lined with trees and benches. Because there is no vehicular traffic on the walls, it is a popular spot for both tourists and locals to walk, jog, or cycle. If you choose to rent a bike, the loop takes only about 15 to 20 minutes. Along the way, you’ll find several "bastions" that now house cafes, restaurants, and playgrounds, as well as multiple ramps and stairs that allow you to exit into the medieval town center at various points. The elevated position offers stunning views of the red-roofed city, its many churches, and the surrounding Tuscan hills, making it one of the most scenic and relaxing urban walks in Europe. Many visitors spend more than two hours on the walls because they stop to enjoy the views or picnic under the shade of the plane trees.
