How long is the walk through the Siq at Petra?

The Siq (al Siq) is a narrow gorge from about half of the way between Petra visitor center and Petra city, starting from the Bab al-Siq and ending in the Treasury (al Khazneh). It's a spectacular 15-minute (1.5 KM) walk through a red stone mountain that is at places 100s of feet tall.

Allow about 30 to go down and 45-60 minutes return depending on how fit you are. Exceptional part of the Petra. Incredible structure and views almost every step. Uneven surface makes it even more interesting.

Like I said, Petra itself is not as strict – I personally wore biker shorts (but I wouldn't have worn anything shorter though). You'll be mostly hiking, and even if you take the easiest trail, the main one, it's still better to wear something that is hiking-friendly.

Distance and Difficulty: The Petra Monastery Trail is 2.5km / 1.6 miles return from the end of the Petra Main Trail (4km in). Medium walk, steep with lots of stairs, but not too long (in my opinion, the Petra map says hard).

Little Petra is free to visit and takes about 1 hour to go round. Like the main Petra site the buildings are carved from the Sandstone, but mostly smaller, although impressive. So get the most enjoyment out of the site it is best seen before Petra.

One of the main monuments of Petra is the Monastery. After discovering the Siq, the Treasury and the Lower Street of Petra, if you are not too tired and hot, you can climb the 850 steps up to discover it.

The entrance into Petra is in the town Wadi Musa, a great place to stay overnight when visiting Petra. The walk from the entrance of Petra to the Treasury (the iconic facade that is the highlight on a visit to Petra), is 2km long, or just over one mile.

You can totally visit Petra by yourself—we did! If you're visiting several areas in Jordan, a tour guide and driver may simplify things, but it's certainly not a requirement.

It is fine to travel in Jordan in jeans most of the time, and you can, of course, wear them in Petra as well, in case this is the piece you never leave your home without, but as the visit of Petra requires quite a lot of walking, we think hiking trousers are a much better choice.

While you could do the hiking in a pair of Converse, you'll be more comfortable in shoes with grip. If you're planning on tackling some of the more advanced routes, or even just the 850+ stairs to the Monastery, hiking boots would be ideal.
