How long should a trip to Africa be?

The long journey From most other locations journeys of at least 15 hours are commonplace. For most people this long journey will mean that a trip needs to spend at least 10-13 nights in Africa to make the travel worthwhile, more ideally 14-18 nights if possible.

Given the continent's immense size and the logistical complexity of travel in 2026, a trip to Africa should be a minimum of 10 to 14 days. For a classic safari in South Africa or Kenya, you need at least 3 to 4 days on the ground in the bush to account for the "rhythm" of the animals and potential weather shifts, plus time to explore urban hubs like Cape Town or Nairobi. If you intend to combine regions—such as a safari in Tanzania followed by a beach stay in Zanzibar—you should aim for 18 to 21 days. African travel often involves smaller bush planes, long drives on unpaved roads, and significant time zone changes, all of which require "buffer days" to avoid burnout. A shorter one-week trip is only viable if you stay within a single region and utilize direct international flights, but for most, the high cost of the long-haul airfare makes a longer, more immersive itinerary the much smarter investment.
