One day is enough to see the most famous castles in Sintra. If you plan well and go fast, you can see Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle, and either Palacio Nacional de Sintra or Quinta da Regaleira on the same day.



While many tourists try to see Sintra as a half-day trip from Lisbon, it is highly recommended to spend at least one full day, or preferably two days, to truly experience its magic. A single day (starting very early at 8:00 AM) is enough to see the "Big Three": Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle, and Quinta da Regaleira, though this will involve significant uphill walking and a very fast pace. However, to see the "hidden gems" like the Monserrate Palace and the Convento dos Capuchos, or to enjoy a leisurely lunch in the historic village center, a second day is essential. In 2026, Sintra is more popular than ever, and wait times for the 434 tourist bus can be long; spending two days allows you to spread out your visits and avoid the "tourist rush" between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. If you are a fan of romantic architecture and lush botanical gardens, a 48-hour stay at one of the local boutique guesthouses allows you to wander the misty forest trails in the early morning and evening when the day-trippers have departed, providing a much more serene and mystical experience.

A typical visit to the Castelo dos Mouros lasts 60-90 minutes, and is a surprisingly large complex. The peak hours are the early afternoon (12:00-14:00) just after everyone has had their lunch in Sintra town and then head into the hills, where the Pena Palace and Moors castle are situated.

Alternatively, you can walk to Quinta da Regaleira. From Sintra train station it's a 22 minute walk, and from Sintra town it's about 15 minutes.
