How long should I stay in Punta Arenas?

Known for being the southernmost city in Chile, Punta Arenas attracts plenty of travelers en route to the icy shores of Antarctica. And while most cruise through this port town without spending so much as a night, it's worth bunkering down in this bustling hub for at least three days of exploring.

For most travelers, 2 to 3 days is the ideal amount of time to spend in Punta Arenas. As the gateway to Chilean Patagonia and Antarctica, it serves as a logistical hub, but it also offers several unique attractions. One full day is typically dedicated to visiting the Magdalena Island Penguin Colony to see Magellanic penguins, and another half-day can be spent exploring the historic city center, the waterfront, and the famous Municipal Cemetery. If you are a history buff or interested in maritime exploration, you might add a third day to visit the Nao Victoria Museum. Most visitors use Punta Arenas as a starting or ending point for a trip to Torres del Paine National Park, but spending a few nights here allows you to experience the unique culture of the world's southernmost large city.
