The hike from the Grindelwald train station up to the First summit is a classic Alpine ascent that typically takes between 3.5 and 4.5 hours to complete. The trail covers about 7 to 8 kilometers (approx. 4.5 miles) with a significant elevation gain of roughly 1,100 meters (3,600 feet). It is a steep, uphill climb that follows a well-marked yellow signage path, often running beneath the gondola line. For those in excellent physical condition, it can be done in under 3 hours, but most 2026 hikers allow for extra time to enjoy the panoramic views of the Eiger North Face and the Wetterhorn. Because the path is quite demanding on the legs, many visitors choose the "hybrid" approach: taking the 25-minute gondola up to First and then hiking the easier 1-hour trail to Bachalpsee Lake, rather than the full ascent from the valley floor.
