Disneyland is home to a famous colony of approximately 200 feral cats. Far from being a secret, these "working cats" are an official, though elusive, part of the park's staff. They were first discovered in Sleeping Beauty Castle in the 1950s, and rather than removing them, Disney realized they provided a natural and effective form of pest control, specifically helping to keep the rodent population in check during the overnight hours. Today, the cats are well-cared for by the "Cats of Disneyland" program; they are all spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and provided with several hidden feeding stations throughout the 160-acre property to supplement their natural hunting. While they are mostly nocturnal and stay away from the loud crowds, you can often spot them during the day in quieter areas like the Hungry Bear Restaurant in Disneyland or near the Grizzly Peak area in California Adventure. They have become such local celebrities that they have their own dedicated social media fan pages and unofficial merchandise.
