How many days in advance can you buy JR Pass?

Advanced order for the Japan Rail Pass can be placed starting 6 months before your planned travel date on JRPass.com. Orders with a lead time longer than 3 months, will be dispatched about 60 days before your selected day of travel. This is because the Exchange Order has to be activated within 90 days after issue.

You can purchase a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) up to 90 days (3 months) in advance of the date you plan to exchange it in Japan. When you buy the pass through an authorized online vendor or a travel agency, you receive an "Exchange Order" (a physical voucher or digital confirmation). Once you arrive in Japan, you have exactly 90 days from the date of issue to visit a JR Exchange Office and swap that voucher for the actual rail pass. At the time of exchange, you will specify your "Activation Date"—the day you want your 7, 14, or 21 days of travel to begin—which must be within 30 days of the exchange date. In 2026, many travelers prefer to buy their pass at least 30 days before departure to allow for shipping of the physical Exchange Order, though official "direct" online purchase options now allow for a more streamlined digital process. It is vital not to buy the pass too early (more than 90 days out), as the voucher will expire before you can legally exchange it at a Japanese train station.

The JR pass is only worth it if you travel through different cities, if you are just travelling to Tokyo to Kyoto for example, I would just pay on the Suica. You can do the online calculator or just use google to calculate which trip is easier - paying individually on Suica or getting a JR Pass.
