How many days in Australia is enough?

For a more immersive Australian experience, six to 10 days is often enough to get a good taste of what Australia has to offer (though we're sure you'll leave wanting more). With this amount of time, your best bet is to pick a coast – either the east or the west.

To truly do Australia justice for a first-time trip, a stay of 3 to 4 weeks is considered the ideal happy medium. Because the country is roughly the same size as the United States, a 7-day or 10-day trip is often too rushed, leaving you spent in airports rather than enjoying the sights. A 3-week itinerary typically allows for a "Golden Triangle" route: one week in Sydney and the Blue Mountains, several days in the Outback (Uluru), and a week in Queensland for the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. If you have 4 weeks, you can comfortably add Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road or a trip to the rugged west coast around Perth. For those on a very tight schedule, a "Highlights" trip can be done in 14 days, but this requires taking several domestic flights and being very selective about your destinations. In 2026, travelers are increasingly using "multi-city" flight bookings to fly into one city and out of another to save time. Ultimately, "enough" depends on your appetite for travel; while you could spend a year and not see it all, a month provides enough time to soak up the coastal lifestyle, explore the unique wildlife, and understand the vastness of the Australian continent.
