For the majority of travelers, one single day (or even half a day) is sufficient to see the primary sights of Pisa. The city's main claim to fame is the "Piazza dei Miracoli," which contains the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral (Duomo), the Baptistery, and the Camposanto. These landmarks are all located in the same square and can be thoroughly explored in about 3 to 4 hours, including the time it takes to climb the tower. Because Pisa is a major stop on the train line between Florence and Rome or the Cinque Terre, many visitors choose to "stop over" for the afternoon, store their luggage at the station, see the tower, and move on to their next destination. However, if you stay for two days, you can explore the "real" Pisa away from the tourist crowds, such as the vibrant Piazza dei Cavalieri, the Keith Haring "Tuttomondo" mural, and the beautiful strolls along the Arno River. Unless you are using Pisa as a strategic base for day trips to Lucca or the Tuscan coast, you likely won't need more than 24 to 48 hours to feel like you've seen the best of the city.
