How many drops is Tower of Terror?

The attraction at Disney California Adventure Park. Unlike the original Florida tower, this version features three drop shafts.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios uses a sophisticated computer system that creates a randomized drop sequence, meaning the number of drops varies every time you ride. While the ride profile changes, you can generally expect between 4 and 8 drops during a single cycle. These drops aren't just gravity-fed; the elevator car is actually pulled down faster than terminal velocity by high-speed cables, reaching speeds of roughly 39 mph. The "random" sequence was introduced in 2002 to ensure that even frequent visitors are surprised. Some sequences include "fake-outs" where the car rises suddenly after a partial drop, while every sequence is guaranteed to include at least one "big" drop from the full 13-story height (roughly 130 feet) to the bottom of the shaft.
