California still leads in electric school bus adoption, with over 2,000 committed electric buses across the state, at least 34% of which are delivered or operating.
The US e-bus market experienced a 66% increase since 2021. As of September 2022, the total count of full-size battery-electric and fuel-cell electric transit buses has reached 5,480 (it was 3,297 in 2021).
One of the MTA's existing 15 electric buses being charged at a depot in Manhattan. The MTA, which runs the largest public bus system in the country, plans to transition its entire fleet of 5,800 buses to battery-powered electric vehicles by 2040.
Currently, the MTA runs about 15 electric buses in the city. The majority of its 5,800 buses still run on diesel or hybrid electric and diesel. Carroll says this phase of the project is only the beginning.
The New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA, publicly known as MTA New York City Transit as part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority) operates roughly 4,500 buses within the 5 boroughs of New York City daily branded as both MTA New York City Bus, and MTA Bus.
SHENZHEN — China accounts for over 90% of the world's electric buses and trucks in 2021, according to the International Council on Clean Transportation. It's part of China's efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels, though it remains the largest emitter of carbon dioxide.
In fact, electric school buses have safety features that make the risk of fire even more improbable, including sophisticated battery temperature controls, weather-durable casing and vehicle design that makes battery damage less likely.
Additionally, commitments from California and major transit hubs, including New York City and Seattle, to go 100 percent electric with their bus fleets have led to estimates that electric buses will make up one-third of the national fleet by 2045.
What Are The Disadvantages Of Electric School Buses? The two biggest disadvantages are cost and range. Although an electric bus is likely to save money in the long term, the initial purchase price is considerably higher.
Although all battery electric bus batteries will store electricity in the form of DC, or direct current, power, the electric grid transmits and provides electricity in the form of AC, or alternating current, power. Therefore, a critical process of charging a BEV is the transformation of AC power into DC power.
Unlike diesel buses, electric school buses produce no toxic exhaust, so they're much better for children's health. They can also lower greenhouse gas emissions, reduce school operating expenses, create green manufacturing jobs, and support a more resilient grid powered by greater amounts of renewable energy.
Originally a streetcar line along Second Avenue, it is now the M15 bus route, the busiest bus route in the city and United States, carrying over 9.6 million people annually.

Still, having so many electric buses is not common for a transit agency. According to the 2020 National Transit Database, the most recent report from the federal government, there are 1,268 electric buses actively operating at transit agencies across the U.S. — out of 63,530 total buses.
