As of early 2026, the New Terminal One (NTO) at JFK International Airport is in the first phase of its massive $9.5 billion redevelopment. The existing, older Terminal 1 has historically operated with 11 to 14 gates, but the new facility currently being built on the footprint of the former Terminals 1, 2, and 3 is designed to be much larger. When the first phase of the New Terminal One opens its doors in 2026, it will begin operating with a limited number of new gates while construction continues. Upon its final completion (scheduled for 2030), the New Terminal One will feature a total of 23 gates across 2.6 million square feet, making it the largest standalone terminal in the United States. During this transition period in 2026, travelers should expect frequent changes to gate locations and significantly increased walking times due to the ongoing construction zones. The terminal is primarily used by international carriers like Air France, Etihad, and Lufthansa, who require the larger gate configurations designed for wide-body aircraft like the Airbus A380.
