How many hangers do you get on a cruise ship?

Most cruise lines provide around eight coat hangers in your cabin, barely enough for one person travelling for two weeks, never mind a family of four! Wire coat hangers take up very little room in your case and you'll be grateful of the extra hanging space once you remember that irons aren't allowed on board.

On a standard cruise ship in 2026, you can typically expect to find between 15 and 25 hangers already waiting in your stateroom closet. Most lines, such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian, provide a mix of standard wooden hangers and some with clips for trousers or skirts. For a single traveler or a couple on a short 3-to-5-day cruise, this is usually sufficient; however, for families of four sharing a cabin or those on a 14-day voyage, it often falls short. The "golden rule" of cruise packing is that you do not need to bring your own hangers. If you find that you have more clothes to hang than hangers available, simply leave a note for your stateroom steward or ask them in person; they can almost always provide an additional 10 to 20 wire or plastic hangers within a few hours at no extra cost. This helps save precious weight and space in your luggage. In 2026, some newer "eco-friendly" ships have moved toward high-quality recycled plastic hangers that are permanently attached to the rod to prevent theft and loss.

On embarkation day all the cruise lines sell lanyards in various places and in at least one onboard store after that. If you want a lanyard branded to Royal Caribbean, Carnival, MSC, or any other cruise line, you can get one, but you will generally pay $15 to $20 each and may not have a lot of choices.
