How many outlets are in an Amtrak bedroom?

You only get one outlet in a roomette compartment, so you'll need to switch between charging multiple items. Depending on the car, your outlet may be recessed so make sure your power strip has a straight wall plug, not a flat plug.

A standard Amtrak Bedroom—found on both Superliner (two-level) and Viewliner (single-level) trains—typically features two to three standard 120V AC electrical outlets. In most configurations, there is one outlet located near the small vanity/sink area and at least one other near the seating or "sofa" area. Because these rooms are designed for up to two or three adults, the number of outlets is often insufficient for modern travelers with multiple smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Consequently, it is a "gold standard" travel tip to bring a small, non-surging power strip or a multi-port USB charger to expand your charging capacity. In 2026, some of the newer, refreshed Viewliner II sleepers have added more convenient USB charging ports, but the classic "Bedroom" remains somewhat limited in its electrical layout. It is also important to note that these outlets are meant for low-power electronics; using high-wattage items like hair dryers can sometimes trip the circuit breaker for your entire room.

Many of the lines don't make any money or are operated at a loss. To accommodate the money-losing routes, Amtrak uses profits from its popular lines, such as the Northeast Corridor. Since this is one of the most popular routes, Amtrak can charge higher prices and send those profits to other, less profitable lines.
