The "elevator" in The Haunted Mansion, famously known as the Stretching Room, is designed to hold a significant number of guests to maintain the high throughput of the attraction. While Disney does not release an exact "maximum capacity" for legal and safety reasons, it is estimated that each room can accommodate approximately 80 to 100 guests per cycle. In Disneyland, this room is a functional elevator that lowers guests to the level of the underground ride tracks, while at Walt Disney World, it is a theatrical illusion where the ceiling rises. The room is large enough that even during peak capacity, guests are encouraged to move "into the dead center of the room" to make space for everyone. Because the ride uses a continuous "Omnimover" system (Doom Buggies) that handles about 2,400 people per hour, the Stretching Rooms must be large enough to provide a steady stream of "foolish mortals" to the loading area without causing a bottleneck at the entrance.
