How many people use the Moscow Metro?

Today, the Moscow Metro has 15 lines including the Moscow Central Circle. Together with the Moscow Central Diameters and the Moscow Monorail, there are 333 stations which are being used by more than 9.5 million people daily. And it continues to develop.

The Moscow Metro is one of the busiest and most efficient rapid transit systems in the world, serving approximately 7 to 8 million passengers every day. On an annual basis, it handles over 2.4 billion trips. The system is famous for its incredible "headways," with trains arriving as frequently as every 90 seconds during peak morning and evening rush hours. As of 2026, the ridership continues to grow due to the aggressive expansion of the "Big Circle Line" (BCL) and the integration of the Moscow Central Diameters (MCD) commuter rail system. The metro is the lifeblood of the city, carrying more passengers than the London Underground and the New York City Subway combined on a daily basis. To handle this volume, the system utilizes high-capacity "Moskva" trains and has recently implemented "Face Pay" biometric entry systems at all stations to speed up the flow of commuters through the turnstiles.
