How many stations do TfW operate?

Transport for Wales Rail manages 248 National Rail stations, including all 223 in Wales, and operates all passenger mainline services wholly within Wales, and services from Wales, Chester, and Shrewsbury to Liverpool, Manchester, Manchester Airport, Crewe, Birmingham, Bidston and Cheltenham.

Transport for Wales (TfW) manages and operates 248 stations across the Wales and Borders rail network as of 2026. While the company runs train services across a wider geographical area reaching as far as Manchester, Liverpool, and Birmingham, it holds the "Station Facility Owner" (SFO) responsibility for nearly every station within the borders of Wales, as well as several key stations on the English side of the border. This extensive network ranges from major urban hubs like Cardiff Central, which sees millions of passengers annually, to some of the most remote and scenic unstaffed halts in the United Kingdom along the Cambrian and Heart of Wales lines. In 2026, TfW is in the midst of a multi-billion pound "Station Improvement Vision," which has seen many of these 248 locations upgraded with better accessibility, improved digital signage, and "secure station" accreditation. The management of these stations is a core part of the Welsh Government's integrated transport strategy, aiming to create a "one-network" feel where rail stations serve as multi-modal hubs for buses, cycling, and walking, ensuring that even the smallest rural stop feels part of a modern, cohesive national infrastructure.
