How many suitcases do you need for a week trip?

We always go for 2 weeks and take one checked bag each and one carry-on each. If I was to go for one week, I think we could get away with one checked bag between us, and a carry-on each. We normally do 2 huge. Our carryone is a small bag with just our necessary paperwork, meds, and maybe a book.
