Atlantis, The Palm, the massive ocean-themed resort located at the apex of the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai, cost approximately $1.5 billion USD to construct. Developed as a joint venture between Kerzner International Holdings Limited and Istithmar, the resort opened in September 2008 with a star-studded celebration that remains one of the most expensive private parties in history. The construction was an enormous engineering feat, requiring over 58,000 kilometers of steel bars and the creation of a massive 11-million-liter open-air marine habitat known as the Ambassador Lagoon. The resort features 1,548 rooms and the expansive Aquaventure Waterpark, which was designed to be one of the most technologically advanced water parks in the world. In 2023, its sister property, Atlantis The Royal, opened nearby with an even higher construction price tag of roughly $1.6 billion USD, further cementing the Palm Jumeirah as one of the world's most capital-intensive luxury tourism destinations.
