As of 2026, Boeing has paid or committed to pay over $3.6 billion in settlements and penalties related to the 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019. This includes a landmark $2.5 billion settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice in 2021 (consisting of a $243 million fine, a $500 million victim compensation fund, and $1.7 billion for airline customers). More recently, in June 2025, Boeing agreed to a further $1.1 billion deal with the DOJ to avoid criminal prosecution, which included an additional $444.5 million specifically for the families of the victims. These figures do not include the billions more in "indirect" costs, such as the grounding of the fleet, legal fees for private lawsuits, and the massive 2024–2025 investments in safety and quality control systems. While the financial toll is immense, the legal fallout continues to be a subject of intense public and regulatory scrutiny well into 2026.
