How much is senior bus fare in NYC?

Reduced-fare MetroCards and One Metro New York (OMNY) are available for riders who are 65 or older or riders who have qualifying disabilities. The reduced fare is half the base fare. (For example, the base fare for subways and local buses is $2.90, so the reduced fare is $1.45.)

In New York City, senior citizens (aged 65 and older) are eligible for a Reduced-Fare rate that is significantly lower than the standard fare. As of January 4, 2026, while the base fare for subways and local buses increased to $3.00, the MTA maintained its policy of offering a 50% discount for seniors, making the reduced fare $1.50 per ride. For those using express buses, the senior rate is $3.60 (compared to the full fare of $7.25). To access these rates, seniors can use a Reduced-Fare MetroCard or, more conveniently, enroll in the Reduced-Fare OMNY program, which allows you to "tap and go" with a smartphone or contactless bank card and have the discount automatically applied. There is also a 7-day unlimited "Fare Cap" for reduced-fare riders set at $17.50, meaning you never pay for more than roughly 11 rides in a week.

In fact, 88% of the time, OMNY is cheaper than a 30-day MetroCard if I average 10 rides a week. Let's see if we can generalize this to other weekly averages: As you can see, up until I average 11 rides a week, OMNY is usually better. More often than not, I'll save money if I stick with it and skip the Unlimited card.
