How strict is Amtrak security?

RANDOM PASSENGER AND BAGGAGE SCREENING With due respect to passengers' privacy, the random and unannounced screening and inspection of passengers and their personal items is completed as quickly as possible - usually in less than a minute.

Amtrak security in 2026 is noticeable but significantly less invasive than airport security. Unlike the TSA, Amtrak does not require passengers to arrive hours early for full-body scans or to remove shoes and belts. However, security is "strict" in terms of visibility: random bag checks are performed by uniformed officers and K-9 units at major hubs like Penn Station or Union Station. You may be asked to allow an officer to swab your luggage for explosives residue. Additionally, Amtrak utilizes a "Passenger Manifest" system and requires a valid government-issued photo ID for all travelers 18 and older. While you won't experience a "security line" for every trip, the 2026 focus is on mobile patrol and "behind-the-scenes" surveillance, ensuring safety without the bottle-necking delays characteristic of modern aviation hubs.
