A giga coaster is a specific class of roller coaster that features a height or a first drop measuring between 300 feet and 399 feet (91 to 121 meters). The term was originally coined by Cedar Point and Intamin during the construction of Millennium Force, which opened in 2000 as the world's first coaster to break the 300-foot barrier. These massive structures are designed for extreme speed (often exceeding 90 mph) and "airtime," focusing on a massive initial drop and large, sweeping turns rather than inversions like loops or corkscrews. As of 2026, there are only a handful of giga coasters in existence worldwide, including Fury 325 at Carowinds, Intimidator 305 at Kings Dominion, Leviathan at Canada's Wonderland, and Orion at Kings Island. If a coaster exceeds 400 feet, it enters the next category known as a "strata coaster" (such as Top Thrill 2 or Kingda Ka). Giga coasters remain the "gold standard" for many enthusiasts because they provide a sustained, high-speed thrill that lasts much longer than the short, launch-based experience of a strata coaster, making them a center-piece attraction for any major amusement park.
