London buses are all cashless, so you need an Oyster card, Travelcard or contactless payment card to ride. Bus fare is £1.75, and a day of bus-only travel will cost a maximum of £5.25. You can transfer to other buses or trams for free an unlimited number of times within one hour of touching in for your first journey.

To get access to student ID discounts in the USA, you'll first need to apply for a free NUS card from your university to prove that you're a student at one of the educational institutions in the US. Students can also apply for the NUS card online.
What is the difference between Oyster and Visitor Oyster cards? Non-UK residents can buy Visitor Oyster cards* before arriving in London, and they are ready to use immediately, so you save time. Standard Oyster cards cost £5 (refundable) and can be purchased on arrival and loaded with credit.
If you're visiting London for 3 days or less, the best option is to get the Oyster Card, as it's the most cost-effective system. For stays of over 4 days, we recommend getting the 7-day Travelcard, since it's cheaper than getting 7 x 24-hour travelcards.
Is it cheaper to use Oyster or contactless? As both cards use the same Pay As You Go system and are compatible with the TfL Oyster & Contactless app, the costs are comparable.
You can top up your Oyster card at stations, online and at Oyster Ticket Stops (usually a local convenience shop). There are currently 3,900 Oyster Ticket Stops and you can find your nearest one on the TfL website.
