Surviving a 48-hour train journey requires careful preparation in three areas: comfort, hygiene, and entertainment. First, invest in a good travel pillow, an eye mask, and earplugs; the constant "clack-clack" and flickering lights of stations at night can disrupt sleep. For hygiene, since showers are often unavailable or cramped, bring large body wipes, dry shampoo, and a small "freshen-up" kit with a toothbrush and deodorant. Regarding food, don't rely solely on the train's dining car, which can be expensive and inconsistent; pack a "snack bag" with protein bars, nuts, fruit, and plenty of bottled water to stay hydrated. Entertainment-wise, download your movies, podcasts, and books in advance, as Wi-Fi on long-distance tracks is notoriously spotty. Finally, make an effort to move around; walking to the lounge car or stretching during longer station stops helps prevent leg stiffness and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). If you are social, the lounge car is also the best place to meet fellow travelers and hear unique stories that make the long hours pass much faster.
