The first airport in the United States was built in the state of Maryland. Specifically, the College Park Airport, established in 1909, holds the title of the world's oldest continuously operating airport. It was founded by the United States Army Signal Corps to serve as a training ground for the Wright Brothers to instruct the first military pilots. While many associate early aviation with North Carolina (where the first flight occurred) or Ohio (the Wrights' home), Maryland provided the infrastructure for the first "airport" as a permanent facility. The site is now a significant historical landmark and houses a museum dedicated to the "firsts" of aviation history, including the first mile-high flight and the first female passenger.
