Star Ratings are an average of rated trips. If you have two rated trips, one 5 star and one 4 star the average is 4.5. If you have hundreds of trips and a 4.5 then it would not be considered a very good average rating however…

It's every 500 ratings. And it doesn't really reset. Lower ratings get knocked off once you start getting enough to cycle through 500 past ratings. 5 star ratings get knocked off by new lower ratings as well, just in case there was confusion with your wording.
