edit: used the 65L unexpanded on both of my united flights as carry on, no issues either way. Probably could have squeezed it down to fit into the size guide if needed but this way I got a tiny bit of extra room in the bag and no issues closing the overhead, older united plane where the bags lay flat not on their side.
