Is anyone building a hyperloop?

There has been so much hype, with several firms years ago saying that we would have a mass-scale hyperloop system by now. But the dream of a hyperloop, a mega-fast transportation system. hasn't ended yet. TUM Hyperloop told CNBC it is still developing the technology.

Yes, in 2026, several entities are actively advancing hyperloop technology, though a fully operational commercial line remains in the "pilot" phase. HyperloopTT (Hyperloop Transportation Technologies) is currently conducting full-scale passenger capsule testing in Italy and North America, focusing on safety certification. Meanwhile, Virgin Hyperloop (now under DP World) has shifted its primary focus toward high-speed cargo and logistics, with feasibility studies ongoing in the UAE and India. In the United States, several states have expanded funding for "high-speed transit corridors" that include vacuum-tube research. Additionally, The Boring Company continues to iterate on "Loop" technology, which, while not a true vacuum-tube hyperloop, serves as a developmental stepping stone. While the dream of 700 mph travel is not yet a public reality, 2026 has seen significant breakthroughs in magnetic levitation and vacuum-seal durability that bring commercial lines closer to fruition.

Some argued the system would be pricier and require more energy than Musk had calculated, making the Hyperloop impractically expensive. Plus, California has already invested years and millions of dollars in a stalled attempt to build a normal high-speed train line for the same journey.

First imagined at least 100 years ago, it would basically look like some version of those green tubes on Futurama. Imaginary no longer, it would seem. If everything goes according to plan, Hyperloop One's pods will carry humans and cargo at 760 mph — 30 percent faster than a 747 airplane.

Hyperloop developers have also suggested the system could serve as a competitive alternative to traditional freight transportation modes of air, truck, or rail.

Becking said a timeframe of 15 years before hyperloops start to become widespread “is ambitious, but we think it's definitely possible.” Based on this prediction, by around 2035 hyperloops should start replacing short and mid-haul flights on routes such as Bangkok to Chiang Mai or Amsterdam to Paris.

In just a few short years, a new transportation model will revolutionize not just the transportation industry, but all of society: the Hyperloop, a high-speed system that is energy-efficient and without direct emissions.

MORE DETAILS

There is no Hyperloop service in the U.S. today. First mentioned by Musk to a reporter in 2012, the Hyperloop is a high-speed electric vehicle that carries passengers and travels in a low-pressure environment such as a vacuum tube without touching the walls.

Now, Musk estimates that such a Hyperloop would only cost $6 billion to construct, which may sound like a lot, but high-speed rail between these two cities is estimated to cost $68 billion!
